 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

June 2010

Dear Members,

Back from Wichita, Kansa !!!  What a wonderful experience visiting SDP Headquarters, meeting with Chapter Presidents from the world over, proudly representing our Chapter and taking fantastic classes all in one week.  We carried our red “sparkly” shoes but did not need them to get home after all!!! There were no tornadoes and the weather was great (answered prayers).  Pat Stubbs and I were lucky prize winners in two different events sponsored by SDP and other contributors. It was really a good thing that we carried and extra piece of luggage even though my luggage was examined in Oklahoma City because I had so many bottles of paint and 2 large tubes (I suppose it did look suspicious) filled with posters!  As Seminar Chair, Pat met with several traveling teachers and spoke with them about teaching at our Chapter. One great lady was willing to design a special chair just for our chapter if we hired her to come here!  We heard so many compliments from former teachers about our chapter members and the hospitality shown to them during their stay with us.

I certainly am looking forward to our June meeting and sharing some of the ideas I have for Christmas Village painting.  Our Monthly program is being conducted by Linda Burns.  Since Linda’s broken finger is well, she will teach the watercolor that so many have eagerly awaited.

At this month’s meeting, I do look for a group to graciously step forward and begin plans for our 2011 Paint-In.  There is still plenty of time, plenty of help and talent available from the membership and support from the board to plan a fun weekend.  Just getting together is the most important thing !!!

Stay Cool !

Sharon Wade

BUSINESS MEETING

May 15, 2010

Sharon Wade, President, called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone.  The minutes from the April meeting were approved as submitted.

Dot Tuggle gave our devotional on the subject of Memorial Day and the Armed Forces relating a news article about Lee Marvin, Captain Kangaroo, and Mr. Rogers.

Marcy Gwin, 1st Vice President, reported that today’s program will be led by Sherry Duncan featuring Acrylic painting on a bag, apron, or other surface of choice.  The June program will be led by Linda Burns and will feature the watercolor that was postponed from April.

Pat Stubbs, 2nd Vice President, reported there were 35 members present today.  There were no visitors.    Pat remarked that the last couple of months there was more money in the basket that people signed in.    She hates to complain about too much money, but wants people to remember to sign in so they get credit for attendance. This could be important come mini-paint in.

Sara Brasher Treasurer, reported that the checking balance is 11,330.177.    She also reported that a friend has started wine making and gave her about 58 wine bottles and can furnish up to 24 per month if we come up with something to do with them.   Sharon Wade said we could make candle holders, Sara suggested putting lights in them, and Jan Meadows said she has a book on wine bottle painting…These could be good for Christmas Village.

Donna Voss, representing the Show and Tell Committee, was unable to attend as her husband had hip surgery.   Next month we will have 2 drawings.

Susan Hall corresponding secretary reported that after weighing the monthly newsletter, the postage required to ensure delivery was $.61.    She said since the newsletter was 5 ‘real’ pages that it put the postage up.   She asked for more volunteers to use the web site.   Comments were made that patterns didn’t print cleanly, so in the future, she will send patterns viva email to all with email addresses.   If this works, we can then dramatically shorten the ‘paper’ mail list and save the club money.

For the Sunshine report, Peg Farmer reported that Donna Voss’s husband had hip surgery and that we should all keep him and Donna in our thoughts and prayers (he is a man and we know how that goes).   Jane Mitchell has a broken toe. Tiese Stroup tore her meniscus while dancing.  Kitty Ludolf’s husband had knee replacement surgery, and Lois Sundquist husband is scheduled for surgery on June 17th for his prostate.   Keep them all in our prayers.   Jan McCary is back and looking beautiful as always.   Jan thanked all for the calls, prayers, and cards.

Scrapbook Committee:  Kitty Ludolf was not in attendance; however Sherry Duncan reported that she needs photos.   Karen Blatter will email her a CD with photos from the web site.

Mini Paint-in: Donna Hartline reminded us that Mini Paint-in will be in September and she still needs 4 teachers.   Bring the projects to do in June and teachers will sign up students.    This gives the instructors a chance to order surfaces and give out in August for prep work that may be required.

Karen Blatter reported that when folks try and Google AGODA, that we have issues with old pages that are not deleted as requested and causing problems by still showing up.   She will send additional request to “Go Daddy” to clean up.

In Community Service efforts Reba McFee reminded us to bring in canned goods, and other non-perishables for the church food bank as they are providing for about 100 families per week.   She also mentioned that in a church discussion they mentioned how impressed they are with our clean-up as they cannot tell we have been here.   Keep up the good work.

Cheryl Cain reminded all to please bring in their painted tote bags to Pam Curry in June so they can be delivered to the receiving organizations.

Christmas Village 2010: Sharon discussed members get together in “meet, greet, paint and eat” sessions with those that live near each other to paint for Christmas Village.   She also reported that we will have a new “GREEN” corner devoted to items that are painted from recycled goods.   We will have samples of the before life of items to focus on before and after.  Examples are the new ball shaped coke bottles @ 2 for $1.00 at Wal-Mart, spark plugs,  cans, light bulbs, etc. whatever had a previous life.    We can make a photo garland of the ‘before’ life.    Our program in August will be painting for Christmas Village.

Old Business:  Sharon Wade reported we still need a chairman for the 2011 Paint-in.   We have reserved a number of rooms and have paid the deposit.  Paint-in pretty much organized itself, and if she doesn’t get volunteers, she will start calling.

Sharon also reminded the group of the MOTTO Contest.   Cheryl Cain and Pam Curry are spearheading and we need more ideas.   Email ideas to Cheryl and/or Pam Curry.   Send to Pam in June.   In a couple of months they will go through submitted ideas and compile them for the members to vote upon.

New Business: Sara Brasher reported that she and Connie Henson are working with a group called Teen Challenge and need brushes.   If anyone has brushes in sizes #4 & #6 Flats or liners, they would greatly appreciate them…they need 30 to 40 for the group to work with.   These are women 18 to 65 that don’t have the opportunities we have.

Trunk Show: In August we will have the annual ‘Junk in the Trunk Show” prior to the meeting.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

                                      Respectfully submitted by,

Susan Hall for Pam Freeman, Recording Secretary

Sunshine Report

Susie Franklin, the little lady that has been coming to AGODA with Dot and Martha, passed away this month.  She had bronchitis and had been released from the hospital once, but the bronchitis turned into pneumonia and her weak heart just could not handle it.

Lois Sundquist's husband is having surgery on 16 June.

Leona has had some problems this week.  Wednesday she had numbness in her lips and was dizzy.  Her daughter took her to her heart doctor Thursday.  Friday she had the numbness and was dizzy again.  She called an ambulance and her daughter.  She was taken to the Huntsville Hospital.  She is still there tonight (Saturday). It is suspected that she may have had some mini-strokes.  Leona said the second was more severe than the first one.  Leona’s daughter, Sally, had just brought Leona home from the hospital.  She said that Leona is going to have to have a pace maker and that it will be the end of next week that that will be done.  But for now, Leona seems to be ok and no damage from the "mini strokes".      We need to have Leona in our prayers.  Hopefully, the pace maker will "do the trick"!

Thanks to everyone who lets me know what is going on.  Please drop me a note or call even if you think someone else has already called.

Yours, Peg
